Mohammed Aryeetey wins gold in boxing at the 13th African Games

Ghana’s Mohammed Aryeetey won gold for Ghana in the Minimum Weight -48KG division on Friday. The 21-year-old professional boxer took Ghana’s first gold at the event where Ghana has seven chances at medals and five at gold.

Known as the “Golden Boy” the orthodox boxer with seven wins in nine professional bouts has so far led the way for Ghana. Another gold medal contender for Ghana is Amadu Mohammed at Bantamweight -54KG. The rest are Samuel Takyi at Light Welterweight -63.5KG and Abubakar Kamoko alias Ambitious Tilapia at Cruiserweight -86KG.

Ghana has so far picked up considerable momentum on the medal table as the games draw near the end. The country entered 16 boxers for various divisions in both male and female categories. While nine of them could not reach the medal zone, seven did. Janet Acquah is in the Minimum Weight -48KG division and Theophilus Allotey will slug it out at the Flyweight -51KG division.

Meanwhile, Joseph Commey at Lightweight won gold in the 60KG for Ghana also after outpunching his opponent at the Bokum Boxing Arena.
