William Amponsah makes history at the 13th African Games

sprinter won Ghana’s fourth medal in athletics after finishing in a time of 1:05:13s at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Friday morning. William Amponsah’s heroics received noticeable appreciation from the crowd at the packed Legon Stadium.

His efforts were only bettered by Eritrean Samsom Amare Hailemicael, who won gold. William Amponsah holds the national record in the 10,000m category with a time of 29:50.99, when he placed 5th on March 19, 2024, at the same venue. His victory means Ghana has now secured four medals in athletics. Ghana’s male and female 4x100m relay teams won silver and bronze, respectively. 

Rose Yeboah is the other medalist for the country in athletics after she won gold in the women’s high jump event.

Meanwhile, Ghana is hoping to get more medals on Friday in other sports, including boxing, where the country could get up to five gold medals and two bronze. The Black Satellites are also in the running for gold and will fancy their chances against Uganda later today in Accra.
