Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumua stormed the stage at the Akwaaba Village to support Afua Asantewaa Aduonum who is on a marathon to break and set a new Guinness World Record. He was at the venue to support the singer trying to beat the record set by Sunil Waghmare of India.

Beginning on 24th December, Afua Asantewaa has persisted in her pursuit as Ghanaians cheer her on. Vice President Bawumia was among many other high-profile personalities who thronged the venue to offer her support. Notable include Nana Ama McBrown, Sista Afia, Kobi Rana, Kwabena Kwabena, Clemento Suarez, Teiya of TV3’s GMB and Becca. Others include Cwesi Oteng, DKB, Eno Barony, and Cina Soul.

Speaking following the visit, Dr Bawumia said, “What is clear to me is that talents exist. There is a massive amount of talent in the creative arts but I don’t think we invest sufficiently in the sector.”

He added, “I believe that the returns on the investment could be high for the country because we are looking at job creation, exchange earnings and so on. But I don’t think that we have done sufficient over the years and we have to pay attention to this sector.”

According to Bawumia, “What Afua is trying to do is to break a world record and it is not very easy to do”. He thus urged Ghanaians to support her as she may feel lonely doing this on a Christmas day when others are spending time with their families.

Afua Asantewaa has done over 2 days so far in her singing marathon

“So on a day like this [Christmas day] when everybody is spending time with their families, it could be very lonely and I think that as Ghanaians we should give her all the support and encouragement we can.

“So I think we should give her all the support so I thought I should stop by here and let her know that Ghana is behind her and she should go ahead and break the record.”

“I have been following and I think that she is doing great. I think that Wednesday we will be back here by the grace [of God] and we will be back here to break the record,” Bawumia stated.

Afua Asantewaa Aduonum will perform over 4000 songs over four days and nine hours to break the current record of 105 hours being the longest singing marathon by an individual.
