Naira notes: President Buhari extends deadline for notes

President Buhari of Nigeria has amidst the rising tension due to shortage of new Naira notes announced an extension to the deadline to end the circulation of the old Naira notes in the country.

There have been widespread struggle in the country as people rush to exchange their old Naira notes for the new notes. The government had set Friday, February 17, 2023 as the deadline for holders of the old Naira notes to hand over their notes for the new ones.

According to a BBC news report, Buhari has now extended the deadline to April 10, 2023 but has announced that the 500 and 1,000 old Naira notes can only be exchanged at the central bank and other designated points.

Reports of Nigerians standing in long queues as well as others several people spending time in front of cash machines and sleeping at banks to try to get the new notes have been rife in the media.

The move is seen as a political decision to win votes for the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate Bola Tinubu with elections coming on February 25.

Meanwhile, the BBC reported that several Nigerians skip meals and join long queues or sleep in front of banks due to the shortage of the new Naira notes. One citizen who has skipped breakfast in order to join a queue early in hope of getting cash spoke to the BBC.

“I don’t have any cash. I’ve had to skip breakfast so I could come here, and I don’t know what I will eat for the rest of the day.”
