Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities have been roasted on social media over their handling of one of their players, William Essu. The goalkeeper whose health condition has been deteriorating had written to the Black Meteors head coach Ibrahim Tanko asking to be excused from the national team so he could treat himself. He also asked for assistance to help him treat himself.

However, when pictures of his condition were shared on social media, former Ghana Premier League players criticized the club for their negligence of the player. Despite the club suggesting it is working on helping the player, the club was not spared.

“Our attention has been drawn to pictures of our goalkeeper William Essu circulating on various social media platforms with discussions on traditional media platforms. We plead with the media and general public to be circumspect in the reportage of Essu’s health as all efforts are being made to address the player’s current situation.”

Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko star Abdul Fatawu Safiu wrote, “Kaish Ghana football. You telling us your attention was just drawn to your very own goalkeeper health issue meaning you people never knew.”

Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Emmanuel Nettey joined the conversation by adding, “Wow, just wow, a player under contract, and your attention was drawn when his pics were on social media about his illness and the league starts over the weekend, so his absence didn’t matter cos you had another player to play in his position.”

The former players were not the only people concerned and shocked by the club’s statement. Several other people joined the conversation with one X user Nana Kojo Abrantie adding, “What sort of clubs do we have here in this country??? Like seriously your attention has been drawn to pictures circulating meaning you guys had no idea he was sick or what ?eiii like in this 21st century like what sort of country kraa this.”

Zanzani expressed disgust that people with talent and passion find themselves in the wrong places. The X user tweeted, “It’s so painful that when you’ve the passion to play football but found yourself in a wrong country. Every useless person with money will intend to use you . The boys are suffering”
