Former president John Dramani Mahama has aimed jabs at the Akufo-Addo-led administration for returning Ghana to the IMF despite singing Ghana Beyond Aid since 2017.

Mr Mahama who was speaking at the 2023 edition of the Ghana CEO Summit said the decision of the government to go to the IMF despite the call for self-reliance has made the country an object of laughter.

“Economic sovereignty in this modern era, viewed through the length of viable, healthy and beneficial interdependence and inter-relatedness must become the foundation for social growth and progress,” Mahama stated.

“And the quest for economics oriented must certainly go beyond the flowery and impactless speech about Ghana Beyond Aid,” he added.

While he said he does not see economic sovereignty to mean the absence of interdependence between nations, he thinks it is the economic relationship between Ghana and the rest of the world on terms that are beneficial to Ghana.

Touching on his nomination by the NDC to lead them into the 2024 elections Mr Mahama said he is ready to work with everyone to ensure Ghanaians get the Ghana they want.

“I am determined to work with everyone irrespective of your political affiliations, ethnicity or nationality to rebuild the Ghana we want together,” he pledged.

“Indeed our return to the IMF – cup in hand – has made our Ghana Beyond Aid policy the butt of jokes amongst many commentators in the world. It will take a resolute and committed political will to determine our own economic destiny,” Mr Mahama told the gathering.
