NPP disowns hooligans who invaded UTV to attack A Plus

The New Patriotic Party, NPP, has distanced itself from the 30 people who invaded the studios of United Television, UTV, to attack one of the panellists of its entertainment programme, the United Showbiz, Kwame Asare A Plus.

According to the NPP Communications Director, Richard Ahiagbah, the party has no business with the youth who took the decision to invade the media house. He said the party is ready to cooperate with the authorities to ensure the culprits receive the punishment for their irresponsibility.

In an interview with Citi News, Richard Ahiagbah said, “The party did not sanction anyone to go and disrupt the United Showbiz programme as was reported. We have moved swiftly to make an apology to them [UTV], adding, “We are going to cooperate with the police to investigate the matter. We think that the attack is unacceptable, and it’s condemnable.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Journalists Association, GJA, has intensified calls for the people to be arrested and punished. A statement by called it a “barbaric act” while entreating the police to ensure they are duly punished for their crimes.

“We are informed that about 30 hooligans attacked the studios of the Accra-based private television station, and although the Police arrested some of them, others managed to escape.”

“The GJA expects the Police to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators expeditiously just as they exemplarily and commendably executed in the case of the attack on Dagbon FM in Tamale in May this year.

“The GJA also calls on the government, non-government organisations (NGOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), diplomatic community, international agencies and all well-meaning Ghanaians and people of good conscience to roundly condemn this barbaric act and the masterminds of same.”
