Bawumia promises ‘One Constituency, 10 appointments’

While still serving under the Akufo-Addo-led administration which came to power on the back of numerous promises including one district one factory, one village, one dam and one constituency, one million dollars, Dr Bawumia is taking the promising game a notch higher.

As part of his campaign to secure the flag bearer position of the party, the Vice President has promised to ensure that each constituency gets at least 10 appointments if he is elected as President. He said, the government has the opportunity to appoint 7,000 people and he wants to distribute that among the constituencies by guaranteeing 10 government appointments to each.

According to Bawumia, the motive behind that promise is to ensure the constituencies, especially party people are not left out after they’ve voted for people to lead. He said it is a concern raised by party loyalists and he wants to solve it.

“Party loyalists tell me that when the party is voted into power to form a government, they are left out in the processes of governance. That is why I’m coming up with three initiatives which I believe that if effectively utilised the party and the government will be well integrated. The first one is appointments. Anytime there are appointments, the constituencies normally say they have been left out,” he explained.

“So what I will do is that in governance, a president can make about 7000 appointments, and we have 275 constituencies which we will add one more next year to make them 276, so my plan is that some of the 7000 appointees can come from the constituencies.

“My proposal is that one constituency, 10 appointments. Doing that will ensure that all the constituencies will have a total of 2760 appointments,” he told a gathering of delegates at the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

Dr Bawumia is up against nine other people in the race to replace President Akufo-Addo and lead the NPP to the 2024 elections. He will have to beat them all including former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyeremanten who is popular among the grassroots but less popular with the top brass of the party. Also in his way are the Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, Joe Ghartey, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Boakye Agyarko among others.
