Manchester City and French defender Benjamin Mendy has been found not guilty in six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault making it eight of the 10 charges previously levelled against the 28-year-old former Monaco and Marseille left-back.

Mendy was accused of rape and sexual assault in August 2022, resulting in his suspension by Manchester City as the player and one other stood trial for the crimes.

However, the decision reached on Wednesday was made public on Friday with two charges – one count of rape and another of attempted rape involving a 24-year-old in October 2020 and a 29-year-old woman in October 2018. The jury could not reach an agreement on the two and told the trial judge they were at a point where they could not agree.

His co-accused, Louis Saha Matturie was also cleared of three counts of rape. The remaining two cases will be retried in June.

Manchester City released a short statement following the news. “Given there are open matters related to this case, the club is not in a position to comment further at this time,” the club said in the statement. The club suspended Mendy in August 2021 following his arrest and stopped paying him a month later. His contract with the Etihad side expires at the end of the current season.
