Legon Cities goalkeeper William Essu has received the support of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana, PFAG, as he continues his recovery from his ailments. The goalkeeper’s condition came to light on Wednesday when pictures of his current state surfaced online prompting a response from his club.
Despite seeking to show it was concerned about its players’ welfare in the post, Legon Cities who lost one of their goalkeepers Isaac Sackey, on Tuesday received backlash from the public including former Ghana Premier League players.
The PFAG as a professional body concerned with the welfare of its members decided to act to help the player by paying him a visit at his residence. PFAG’s vice president Tetteh Zutah and General Secretary Anthony Baffoe visited William Essu to offer the association’s support and encourage him as well.
A statement posted on the PFAG’s website following the visit said, “In a heartwarming display of solidarity and camaraderie within Ghana football, our Vice President, Tetteh Zutah, and General Secretary, Anthony Baffoe, paid a visit to the ailing Legon Cities goalkeeper, William Essu.
“The visit was a testament to the PFAG’s commitment to looking after its own, especially when a fellow footballer is going through a challenging period of illness.
“Tetteh Zutah and Anthony Baffoe arrived at William Essu’s residence with smiles and words of encouragement, aiming to lift the spirits of the talented shot-stopper who has been facing health issues recently.
“Essu, known for his remarkable skills between the posts, was deeply touched by the visit and the concern shown by these footballing figures.
“As a Union dedicated to the welfare and well-being of professional footballers in Ghana, the PFAG reaffirms its commitment to providing support to Essu throughout his recovery journey.
“The PFAG believes that the strength of the Union lies in its ability to stand by its members in times of need. We conveyed the importance of staying strong and persevering through difficulties, both in football and in life.
“This demonstration of solidarity reflects the broader commitment of the PFAG to stand by its members in times of need,” parts of the PFAG statement read.
