Telcos to disconnect SIM Cards of persons who registered more than 10

Ghanaians who have registered more than 10 SIM cards with their Ghana Cards will have some of the SIM cards disconnected by the telcos this week. The decision of the telcos is in compliance with a directive from the National Communication Authority.

Per the regulations governing the registration of SIM cards with the Ghana Card, a Ghanaian can register 10 SIM cards across all networks with his Ghana card. A visiting foreigner can only register three while a resident foreigner can register up to 10 SIM Cards. Businesses, however, can register as many as they want.

A directive from the NCA to the telcos states that “all SIMs registered after the limit of ten (10) must be removed from SIM registration databases and deactivated, with the same reflected in the Central SIM Register by Monday, 17th April 2023”.

Some of the telcos have started notifying their customers who have exceeded the limit to visit their offices immediately or have some of their SIMs automatically deducted.

A message from MTN Ghana to one subscriber who exceeded the limit reads, “Dear Valued Customer, you have exceeded the maximum of 10 SIMs that can be registered by an individual. Kindly visit the nearest service centre before April 17, 2023 for further assistance as the additional SIMs will be disconnected. Kindly treat as urgent.”
