In a Facebook post dated December 18, 2024, H.E. Alhaji Said Sinare, National Chairman of the Zongo Caucus Working Committee of the National Democratic Congress, urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government to declare a state of emergency regarding the ongoing Dumsor crisis before handing over power to President-elect H.E. John Dramani Mahama on January 7, 2025.
The Dumsor crisis, which has persisted for several years, is severely impacting Ghanaian businesses, households, and the economy as a whole. Alhaji Said Sinare, a former Ambassador, emphasized that the frequent power outages have led to lost productivity, damaged equipment, and widespread frustration among the population.
Speaking to the media, the former Ayawaso Central lawmaker criticized the current government, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for its inaction. He suggested that they are downplaying the crisis to use it against the incoming government of President John Dramani Mahama.
Alhaji Sinare’s call for a state of emergency reflects the desperation of a nation tired of government inaction. “The Dumsor situation has reached crisis point, and it is imperative that the government takes drastic measures to address it before leaving office on January 7, 2025,” Alhaji Said Sinare stated.
“The failure to provide a reliable and sustainable energy supply is a betrayal of the trust placed in them by the Ghanaian people. It is time for them to take responsibility and declare a state of emergency to tackle this crisis once and for all,” Alhaji Sinare added.
Declaring a state of emergency would allow the government to mobilize resources, expertise, and personnel to address the Dumsor crisis with the urgency and seriousness it requires. It would also demonstrate the government’s commitment to finding a lasting solution rather than merely continuing to manage the situation inadequately.
As the people of Ghana continue to suffer under the burden of Dumsor and the economic challenges facing the country, Alhaji Sinare emphasized the need for the outgoing government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to take responsibility for the situation.
