The Netherlands and Atletico Madrid forward Memphis Depay caught the attention of the fans and media when he made an extraordinary goal celebration. After pulling back Diego Simeone’s men into the lead after their opener was cancelled out, Depay made a kete dance celebration.

Many wondered what inspired the style of celebration by the Dutch international. But he has given the explanations in an interview with La Liga TV. The former Manchester United forward explained that he was paying homage to one of Ghana’s traditional rulers, the Asantehene.

“The dance is from the Ashanti Kingdom in Ghana and it’s paying respect to our king,” Memphis Depay explained.

Adding, “He has a dance as well where ‘he takes, as I give’ and he takes and the kingdom is his. I have the privilege to know the king and that was a celebration for him and obviously celebrating with the team and the fans is a great feeling.”
