Chelsea captain Reece James has shared an emotional message to his fans after undergoing surgery to solve his recurring hamstring problem. The Cobham graduate has been seeing more time in the treatment room than on a football pitch.
Following a successful season-high 32 appearances in 2020/21, the England international managed 26 the following campaign. He managed even less in 2022/23, only making 16 league appearances. Multiple knee and hamstring issues kept him on the sidelines for long spells. With mass exodus and a spending spree that ushered in a new era of talent at Stamford Bridge, Reece James was made captain by Mauricio Pochettino.
However, the English full-back is set to miss a further 16 games this season having already sat out nine in 54 days due to injury. His long spells in the treatment room may also deny him of international tournaments just like it happened at the 2022 World Cup.
In what has been a difficult period for the young defender, he decided to share how people have reacted to his recent struggles. He limped off during a 2-0 defeat to Everton and underwent surgery to solve the recurring issue. But while he is sad and hoping to overcome the challenge he shared via Instagram that people have hit out with “hate” over his issues.
“The footballing world knew I got injured but the procedure I’d go down this time took slightly longer to figure out the best solution.”
“I had surgery today to try fix my reoccurring hamstring issue, the recovery has started, both physically and mentally,” he wrote on Instagram.
“Since this injury I’ve had a good amount of support but significantly more hate and negativity,” he stated.
James who has to watch his Chelsea side struggle for form in successive seasons admitted he is hurt being out injured.
“Believe me, I don’t wanna be injured. I’m happiest when I’m playing football.”
“Thanks to the understanding people that support me despite the highs or lows, it goes a long way”.
Reece James is not expected to be back until at least in March by which point Chelsea would have been deep in the fight for European qualification if it is not already over. His absence may also mean he could likely miss England’s squad for the Euros which kick off in June.
