President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has finally found a response to Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin’s assertion that he is a “lame-duck” president. Akufo-Addo indicated that he is still fully in charge despite Bawumia now being the leader of the party and the focal point towards the next election.
Speaking at Nima where he was interacting with Chiefs and residents, the President said the choice of words used solely the language of the Speaker and not a true representation of who he [President] is.
“Speaker Bagbin says I am a lame duck. Well, that is his language. I am still the president of the republic and I will continue to do so until January 7, 2025. And I have no doubt that the power to make decisions and to carry out policies is still firmly in my hands, and I am not going to let it go. So I don’t know what he is talking about when he says I am a lame-duck president. I am not a lame-duck president,” he stated.

The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin in November this year was reacting to the absence of several members of the Majority during the debate of the 2024 budget. He called out the Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, describing him as one who is struggling. Bagbin then added that the President does not have the full support of ministers because their attention has shifted to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flag bearer.
“I expect the majority who have a limping majority leader, limping because when you look at his back you’re less than those in front of you. You have a lame duck president, a lame duck because you have elected a flagbearer, and loyalty and commitment are shifting. So your president is now lame duck president,” Bagbin stated.
