Electoral Commission sets date for Kumawu by-election

In a statement on April 17, the Electoral Commission set the date for the by-election at the Kumawu Constituency. The by-election has become necessary following the death of the Member of Parliament for the area Philip Basoah.

“The Electoral Commission wishes to announce for the information of the General Public that following the death of the Member of Parliament for the Kumawu Constituency; Hon. Philip Basoah, the seat of the Constituency in Parliament has become vacant. In accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, as amended, the Electoral Commission will hold a By-Election in the Constituency on Tuesday, the 23rd of May, 2023,” the EC announced.

A statement signed by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Madam Jean Mensah has called on prospective candidates to submit their nomination forms to the Returning Officer for the election. Prospective candidates are to return the nomination forms between May 2 and 5 after successfully filing the forms.

“Accordingly, the Commission will receive Nominations from prospective Candidates for the Election of a Member of Parliament for the said Constituency. The Nominations will be received at the Sekyere Kumawu District Office of the Commission from 2nd May 2023 to 5th May 2023 between the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on each day.

“A prospective Candidate may personally deliver or cause to be delivered on his/her behalf by either the Proposer or Seconder of his/her Nomination, the completed Nomination Forms to the Returning Officer at the Sekyere Kumawu District Office of the Commission, on the dates and times stated above”.

Meanwhile, the ruling New Patriotic Party has cleared six persons to contest the party’s primaries to get a candidate for the election. The party’s Chairman of the Vetting Committee told Citi News “We are done with the vetting of the aspirants. They have picked their balloting. We need a very credible candidate to win the by-election. They are all credible, but we need someone who is going to win the seat for us.”

However, the NDC will be represented by Kwasi Amankwah who has already kickstarted his election campaign in the constituency.
