Former Ghana international Christian Atsu may have been laid to rest months ago but memories of the winger are still fresh in people’s minds. The speedy winger’s former coach at Turkish side Hatayspor has revealed what his last moment with Christian Atsu was like.

According to Volkan Demirel, Christian Atsu was very happy the last time they met which happens to be the final match the Ghanaian played. Christian scored a spectacular last-minute free-kick goal to secure all three points for his club against Kasimpasa.

“For two months he’d not played because of injury but in the week building up to the game he came to my office and said that he was ready to play. I told him that was good, but he wasn’t ready to start. In the last 10 minutes, we decided to put him on,” Demirel revealed.

However, the Ghanaian produced the biggest moment of the match deep into injury time when he curled home a free-kick to score in the last moments of the game. Demirel has revealed that he asked Atsu to cross the ball for his teammates but the winger instead told his colleagues that he was going to shoot. he did and it was a goal.

“In the last minute, we got a free-kick and I was telling him to cross it, but he told his teammates he was going to shoot, and he scored a beautiful free-kick,” Demirel continued.

“I was so happy for him because he had been out for a while. He was a good player, but most importantly a good man, a good character, he helped everyone, he would always give money to staff. He had a very big heart,” he recalled the winger’s life outside the pitch.

“After the match, he said to me, ‘I want to keep playing’. The last time I saw him he was happy and then he was gone.”

Christian Atsu was trapped in the rubble for nearly two weeks before his body was found and returned to Ghana. He was given a state-assisted burial at his home town of Ada Foah in the Greater Accra Region.
