Danie Bugri Naabu, the embattled former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party has given an ugly reason why the now infamous leaked tape was recorded. He told the Parliamentary Committee set up to investigate the incident during his appearance before the committee on Monday.

According to the maverick party stalwart, his intentions for recording the tape were to present the facts as reported to him to President Akufo-Addo. He said it is in order to not present the wrong message to the present, the occurrence of which would lead him to lose his respect before the President.

“The reason for recording this tape is that they are coming to tell me to go and tell the President something that they know what they are saying. And it is either I don’t go to tell the President and then I and my party suffer for it. And if I also go to talk to the President, it is good to tell him the right thing and since I cannot keep everything they were telling me at that point, it was very good to record. I know the President, that if I go and tell him something, and it turns out not to be true, next time he won’t give me respect,” Bugri Naabu explained.

Immediately following the leak of the tape which resulted in the arrest of Bugri Naabu’s aide and receptionist, the former regional chairman denied knowing anything about the tape. He later said even if he had information about the tape he won’t say anything until the appropriate time.

Meanwhile, as the saga still drags on, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congres has said the NPP must be dreaming to think they can win the next elections by installing a partisan Inspector General of Police.

He tweeted, “NPP must be joking if they think they can appoint a partisan IGP to save their interests in the 2024 elections. The recorder & the leaker have spilt the beans.”
