Former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party has appealed to the National Intelligence Bureau, NIB to release his aide and receptionist whom they picked on the morning of Thursday. The former party chairman said they left for the office but when he arrived he did not find them and after several calls was told they had been picked up by the intelligence agency.

According to him, he expected the security operatives to at least inform him before arresting his staff. He also said he has not been given the reason as to why the two were picked up but has heard speculations that it is linked to the leaked tape.

“My personal aide, SK, and my receptionist also called Akua left in the morning that they were going to the office. I came to the office and I couldn’t find them. I started calling them because I got scared but to no avail. I’ve just been informed that they are both at the NIB office at Kawukudi junction. They were picked up while they were on their way to the office. I was told they came with a white car and pushed them into the car and whisked them away,” he told Oyerepa TV.

When asked whether he was the one in the tape, he said he will not comment on the tape’s issue until after his staff have been released. He, however, said his staff did not record any audio adding that his phone can record so if they wanted to record any audio they would use his phone not go buy tape.

“I don’t think…I don’t know but they cannot do. We don’t have any recordings here. My phone can record, why should I go and get a tape to record? My phones….are iPhones [and] though I don’t know how to hold[operate] it.” He added, “Some people don’t have sense…even some of my telephone calls were in the tape, do you think if I am recording I will let my personal matter come inside? I don’t know anything about the tape. If I know, I don’t want to talk about it. At the appropriate time we will come out,” he stated.

Ghanaians were shocked late last week when a leaked audio conversation between a senior police officer COP Mensah and a person alleged to be Bugri Naabu went viral. In the audio, the police officer was planning with the party official how the NPP can win the 2024 elections. According to him, unless the current Inspector General of Police IGP Dr George Akuffo Dampare is replaced, the party cannot rig the election results to win. He said IGP Dampare will not tolerate rigging and thus appealed to President Akufo-Addo to replace him.
