Former Arsenal captain and current Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been left out of the Chelsea squad for the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League. The Gabonese international will watch proceedings at this stage from home.
Graham Potter will rely on the services of other frontmen including Atletico Madrid loanee Joao Felix. The former Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona goal poacher has had an underwhelming start to life in Blue and that misery is set to continue.
Aubameyang has scored just one goal in 11 appearances for Chelsea since his switch from Barcelona in the summer window. Chelsea was still under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel when the Gabonese captain signed. Todd Boehly’s led side, however, parted ways with the German tactician less than a week after the arrival of the Gabonese star man.
Chelsea under Graham Potter sparked to life in his early days but have since slumped to a side unrepresentative of the Chelsea that conquered Europe a couple of seasons ago. The English manager inherited a squad that was largely revamped in the summer window. Rahim Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Denis Zakaria as well as Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella all joined the Blues in a busy summer.
Their arrival could did not, however, lead to an immediate rebound from their rotten and lack of spirit performance that saw Tuchel out of the door.
Todd Boehly and his team were busy this January window with record arrivals in Mykailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez. Malo Gusto also joined but returned to France for the rest of the season while David Datro Fofana and Joao Felix have also been added to the roaster with the latter on a short-term deal.
Meanwhile, new signings Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana and Noni Madueke have all also been left out of the squad along side Aubamenyang.
