President Akufo-Addo has pledged GHS1 million to support Medeama SC in the campaign CAF competitions this season. The Premier League champions are Ghana’s sole representative in the CAF Champions League and will begin their campaign with a stern test from  Remo Stars of Nigeria.

The president made the pledge during an interaction with the team following a visit to him on Wednesday. Medeama SC, led by its leadership including coach Evans Adotey, Dr Tony Aubyn, George Mireku Duker, Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Mines and Natural Resources and Chiefs from the Apinto Traditional Council paid a courtesy call on the President at the Jubilee House.

President Akufo-Addo told the team, “I will try to provide a million Ghana Cedis to help you in the CAF campaign,” adding, “The deputy minister is insisting that if I’m in Ghana on the 20th, I should come to Cape Coast. I will see.”

He congratulated the team on its success after the Yellow and Mauves supercharged to the title by leapfrogging Aduana Stars who had occupied the summit of the table for a long period of the season. By winning the championship, Medeama became the third side from Western Region to do so and the first since 1977 when Sekondi Hassacas last won it.

“Congratulations to you, the captain, and the members of the team for this historic achievement,” President Akufo-Addo told the team.

“It’s been 47 years since a team from the Western Region won the cup. This is great. You’ve done a great job. Congratulations.”

Medeama will host Remo Stars at the Cape Coast Stadium on August 18 before travelling to Nigeria for the return leg on August 25. They will face Guinean side Horoya AC if they are able to scale the test of the Nigerians. This will be Medeama’s first time in the Champions League, having previously participated in the Confederations Cup.
