Ghanaian champions Medeama SC will about two months from today engage Major League Soccer D. C United in an international friendly, the first between the two clubs. The game is part of Ghana Week DC, an event to promote the friendship between Ghana and the United States.
Medeama was selected to represent the Ghana Premier League in the friendly match to be contested against D. C United. The match will take place on the final day of the week-long annual event, on October 14, 2023, at the Audi Field.
As the home ground of the joint record Supporters’ Shield champions, the Audi Field is a 20,000 seater stadium at Buzzard Point in Washington, D. C. Aside from hosting the MLS club, it also hosts the National Women’s Soccer League club Washington Spirit as well as XFL club DC Defenders. The stadium was opened in 2018.
Medeama SC is undoubtedly one of Ghana’s top clubs and its conquest of the league this season was one that was destined to happen following years of consistent top performance. The club since changing its name from Kessben FC to Meddeama in 2011 has claimed two FA Cup titles; 2013 and 2015, and the Ghana Super Cup once in 2015 before adding the ultimate jewel to its stock this year after pipping Aduana Stars to the league title.
D.C United on the other hand is a founding member of the MLS when the league kicked off in 1996 with 10 teams. It emerged champion in each of the first two seasons before bouncing back to win its third MLS Cup after losing the third season’s cup to Chicago Fire. It also won its second Supporters’ Shield in 1999 to complete its second overhaul of both major trophies on set. Despite failing to win any major trophy since 2007 when it won the last of its four Supporters’ Shield, it still remains a strong force to reckon with in the MLS. DC United last won the Eastern Conference in 2014 and played in the CONCACAF Champions League the following season as a result.
