Sex tape: court awards N5m damages against Oxlade

Singer Ikuforijimi Olaitan Abdulrahman who is known as Oxlade has been awarded a N5 million damages against him by an Ikeja High Court in Lagos State. The court’s decision follows a suit filed by John Blessing which has been in court for nearly a year after the a leaked sex tape of the duo.

In March 2022, the lady known as John Blessing filed suit against the Nigerian singer after a sex tape of the duo surfaced on social media without the consent of the lady. In her suit, she demanded damages to the tune of N20million and a declaration that the Oxlade’s act of recording their sexual acts without her knowledge amounted to flagrant contravention of enabling laws, violation of her fundamental rights to dignity, privacy and freedom from discrimination guaranteed under Sections 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended); and Articles 5 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcement), Act, CAP A9, LFN, 2004.

However, a in ruling delivered on January 24, 2023 by the Ikeja High Court, Justice Olalekan Oresanya described Oxlade’s act as “despicable, horrendous, classless and distasteful”. He also scolded the musician for his disrespectful the judicial process while accusing his lawyers for aiding him to do it.

Oxlade was then ordered by the court superintended over by Justice Oresanya to pay John Blessing a sum of N5 million in damages. The payment is to be done in two instalments of N3 million and N2 million respectively.

In 2022 when the content of their explicit acts appeared online, the singer issued an apology to the lady and his fans. The video first leaked on Snapchat and it was said he gave the phone to a friend to record how his bedroom skills are good but the friend unfortunately shared it online.
