Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola revealed a bizare secret on Tuesday night after his side trashed Bundesliga club RB Leipzig 7-0 and 8-1 on aggregate to reach the Champions League last 8 for the sixth time in a row.
Speaking after the victory spearheaded an Erling Haaland masterclass in the Etihad, Guardiola said he has three idols in life and one of them visited his direct rivals Manchester United and didn’t even pass at City to see them. That he said remains his biggest disappointment and winning the coveted European trophy three times in a row will not take away that hurt.
“I am going to tell you something, I have three idols in my life: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Julia Roberts. OK? These are my three idols. For obvious reasons, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, and Julia Roberts as well,” he said as quoted by Manchester world.
According to the Catalan, what makes it more disappointing is that the American actress visited not at the time of Sir Alex Ferguson when Manchester United was dominant and winning trophies but during a period when City was better than the Old Trafford giants.
“So, Julia Roberts years ago came to Manchester, not in the ‘90s when Sir Alex Ferguson was winning titles and titles and titles, she came in the period where we were better than United, in these four or five years. And she went to visit Man United. She didn’t come to see us,” he stated.
To him, winning the coveted Champions League three times in a row will not compare that snub by his idol. The Hollywood actress visited Old Trafford in 2016 and was in the stands when Jose Mourinho’s side took on West Ham United in the league in November playing out a 1-1 draw.
“That’s why this is – even if I win the Champions League, it will not compare to the fact that Julia Roberts came to Manchester and didn’t come to see us.”
Manchester City obliterated a hapless RB Leipzig under the bright lights of the Etihad stadium to achieve one remarkable win in this season’s competition so far. The two sides scored one goal each when they first met in Germany a fortnight ago but any hopes of the Germans advancing was gone in 45 minutes thanks to the ruthless Erling Haaland who shuttered the scoring records on the night.
