NDC MPs will ignore Supreme Court to follow Bagbin’s lead – Mahama Ayariga

Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga has stated that the NDC will follow Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s ruling, thus ignoring the Supreme Court’s order. This will likely make the Supreme Court a centre of mockery after the NDC lawmaker accused the apex court of meddling in matters it should not have involved itself in.

“We will act according to Bagbin’s communique and until he communicates otherwise, we will go by his current decision. So if he comes and communicates to us what the court has ruled, we will act because we listen to the Speaker and not to the court,” Ayariga told Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show.

According to the experienced lawmaker, it is not a matter of disrespect to the Supreme Court but one of following the right lead. He said the matter was not supposed to go to the Supreme Court and the court knew very well it was not in its hands to preside over such cases but did it anyway. For failing to stay off, the NDC lawmakers will not go along with it and abuse Ghana’s laws.

“We are ignoring the Supreme Court because it is not supposed to interfere in our work. The constitution is clear on that so it is surprising that the Supreme Court which is the apex of the law will go ahead and rule when it should have stayed off.”

Mahama Ayariga accused the Supreme Court of treating an issue that was not in its jurisdiction as if it was an emergency. This is after the court empaneled justices, led by the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonno to decide the matter in less than 24 hours.

“This is a matter that should not have been entertained by the Supreme Court. This was a matter that was supposed to even go to the High Court. What is so urgent that the Supreme Court had to convene and decide on the matter in less than 24 hours?

He added that, the actions by the Supreme Court make it look like an affiliate of the New Patriotic Party. Mahama Ayariga warned that the Supreme Court should known its limits and act accordingly.

“These are matters that the Supreme Court should not be interfering in and the Supreme Court must stay off these matters. To come in and say these things makes one think the Supreme Court is an extension of the NPP. These are pure matters that the Supreme Court should not be involved in,” he told Bernard Avle.
