NDC MPs have boldly laid claim to the Majority side of Parliament, standing by the ruling of the Speaker of Parliament that 4 seats are vacant in the house. As a result, the ND which now has 135 members despite also losing one member to the incident now has the highest number in the house.

Following the declaration by the Speaker on October 17, 2024, the NDC MPs have declared their intention to take over the Majority duties in Parliament. However, the NPP which is the hardest hit and are on the verge of losing their Majority status following the incident, went to the Supreme Court to seek redress.

The Supreme Court in a decision stayed the Speaker’s ruling until the final case brought by the Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin is heard. Despite the Supreme Court’s intervention, the NDC MPs are determined and said they will only listen to the Speaker’s words.

On Tuesday when Parliament resumed, the NDC MPs moved to the Majority side of the house; the right side of the Speaker. They have been joined by some members of the Majority group including Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

Meanwhile, Bede Ziedeng, MP for Lawra in an interview with Citi News said the NDC MPs are acting based on the Speaker’s ruling. He said they have not heard about any court ruling because since October 17, today is the first time they are returning to Parliament.
