Ghanaian champions Medeama SC has bottled up the chance to progress from the CAF Champions League group stage with a defeat to Al Ahly in Kumasi. The Yellow and Mauve failed to make home advantage count as they fell to the experience of the African champions.
Hussein El Shahat scored the only goal of the match in the 48th minute to put the Egyptians in pole position to advance to the Group D winners. Medeama though still has a chance, it is now based on permutations as the match between Algerian side CR Belouizdad and Young Africans of Tanzania will be a crucial determinant.
CR Belouizdad is placed second but with the same points (5) as Young Africans. Meanwhile, Medeama is bottom with four points having played one match more. The Ghanaian champions will take on the Algerians in the final round of matches on March 2 while Yanga takes on Al Ahly. A win for Medeama could give them a chance depending on the outcome of the Yanga vs CR Belouizdad match tomorrow and the Ahly vs Yanga match on March 2.
The Ghanaians threw away their chances in week 3 when they drew at home to Young Africans before losing the second leg 3-0 away in Tanzania. Their only win in the group stages has come against their Algerian counterparts and they would hope to find a miracle to advance having gone this far. But that miracle will only be possible if neither Young Africans nor CR Belouizdad wins tomorrow.
