John Dumelo: I was ready for Fred Nuamah’s contest

Parliamentary candidate of the NDC for Ayawaso West Wougon, John Dumelo has said he was not afraid to contest his long-time friend and colleague, Fred Nuamah for the ticket. He said he felt he was the fight fit for the party for the elections due to his performance in 2020 but all the same was ready to slug it out with Mr Nuamah.

“For me, it has been months of talking back and forth, and having a series of meetings with stakeholders” adding, “Everything was at the doorstep of Fred Nuamah to still contest or to throw support behind”.

“I didn’t mind the contest but I felt like a contest wasn’t necessary,” he said on TV3’s Ghana Tonight. However, “The party looked at Ayawaso West Wuogon as a different case.,” Dumelo revealed. “I contested the 2020 and we did well. I felt it would have been suicidal to change the candidate.”

Fred Nuamah in his resignation message said, “What lies ahead of us is bigger, and the withdrawal is in the interest of the party. Mr Mahama invited me to help with his national campaign team, and as a dedicated member of the NDC, I prioritize the party’s unity and his Excellency’s project aimed at rescuing our country, but nobody should think I was coerced to bow out”.

Following the withdrawal of Fred Nuamah, the NDC announced on Monday, August 14, that the party has officially endorsed John Dumelo as its candidate for the 2024 elections.

“Upon further consultation with the party hierarchy and after engaging in constructive discussions with all the aspirants, we are pleased to inform the General Public that the two other aspirants have graciously accepted to give the nod to Mr John Dumelo to represent the party,” the NDC said in a statement.
