Ghanaian winger Frank Acheampong has joined forces with former German international Lothar Matthaus and football agent Oliver Konig to acquire the Ghanaian Premier League club. This now makes the three new faces the force behind the meteoric Ghanaian club that is in its second year in the premiership.

According to the new owners of the club, they want to make the Ghanaian club a modern football club.

Lothar Matthaus said his decision for acquiring a stake in the club is to give back to society. “I like to spend all my time in football. I want to give back to the community. We know football a bit longer than you, so you can always come to me or anyone else in the team.”

Speaking at the ceremony to unveil the new ownership of the club, GFA president Kurt Okraku said the former World Cup and Ballon d’Or winner’s decision to join the team is a big win for Ghanaian football.

“We can see a vision unfolding. The partners Oliver König and Lothar Matthäus are winners so the club will become winners. Essentially, Ghana football will become a winner,” he said.

He added that the club plays beautiful football and he loves to watch. And their structures too are well set making them one of the best-established clubs in the country.

“Accra Lions have an identity. They play the kind of football I want to watch. They have the right level of investment at every aspect of the club.”

Also, he used the opportunity to sing the praises of the GFA saying it has created a conducive environment that has “encouraged people to invest in the Ghana football”.

“The good environment we have created in Ghana football has enabled and encouraged people to invest in Ghana football.”

Frank Acheampong who currently plays for Chinese Super League side Shenzhen and previously played in the Ghana Premier League for King Faisal Babes and Berekum Chelsea has joined the list of Ghanaian footballers who are investing back in sports. He is following in the footsteps of Abedi Ayew, Godwin Attram and Odartey Lamptey in owning football clubs or academies in the country.
