Black Stars ahead of their African Cup of Nations qualifiers’ second leg against Angola in Luanda have welcomed a new addition to the team. France-based defender Nicholas Opoku is the latest to join the squad.

Alexander Djiku and Mohammed Salisu have both been ruled out of the match. The former played the first leg in Accra but did not travel with the squad due to injury.

Due to the absence of the two centre-backs, Coach Chris Hughton has called the Amiens defender to join the squad as he seeks to expand his options at the back.

Nicholas Opoku has raked in 24 league outings this season for the French side as they seek to improve their position in Ligue 2.

Nicholas Opoku celebrates a goal with Black Stars team mate.

The defender will be hoping to get his fifth cap for Ghana since making his debut in 2017. He made his bow by coming on to replace Rashid Sumaila in a friendly against the United States of America.

Aside from Alexander Djiku and Salisu Mohammed, skipper of the side Andre Ayew, as well as Club Brugge right-back Denis Odoi, will also be absent through injury.

Ghana edged out Angola in Kumasi thanks to a very late goal by Antoine Semenyo to secure a 1-0 victory for the Black Stars. Ghana will seek to seal qualifications for the 2023 AFCON early with a win in Luanda.

The match will be played today, Monday, March 27, 2023, at the 11 November Stadium in Luanda.
