Ghana’s Black Princesses secured a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the U-20 Women’s football finals in the ongoing 13th African Games. Coach Yussif Basigi’s ladies made a heroic comeback after falling to an early lead by the Nigerians.
In a thrilling encounter at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium, Ghana fell behind thanks to a goalkeeping error that allowed deh Njideka to score. Ghana went into the break without getting back on level terms.
However, Ghana got a lifeline when Tracey Twum levelled things with 13 minutes of regulation time to play. After fighting their way back into the game, Ghana sought the winner but could not create the chance to get the decisive goal. The game ended with nothing to separate the two sides thus ushering them into extra time.
Ghana’s efforts to secure the win continued in extra time. And it came through the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Golden Boot winner Mukarama Abdulai. She got the decisive goal in the 98th minute to give Ghana a chance to win the competition they hosted. Nigeria failed to fight back as the game wore on allowing the Black Princesses to cruise on to win the country a gold medal.
The victory means Ghana’s coach Yussif Basigi has now won gold twice at the All African Games having earned the feat nine years ago with the Black Queens in Congo Brazzaville.
