Mateo Kovacic has joined Manchester City officially from Chelsea in a £25 million deal that could increase to £30 million after add-ons. The deal has long being coming after the Croatian agreed to make the switch to the European champions.
He joins as a replacement for Manchester City skipper Ilkay Gundogan who has sealed a move to Barcelona at the end of his deal with City. Kovacic has joined N’Golo Kante as some of the early exits from Chelsea as the club plans a massive clearout this summer.
And the Croatian said of his move, “This is a brilliant move for me, and I cannot wait to get started with City”.
According to him, the playing style of Pep Guardiola suits him and he is hoping to get started soon. He added that City is one of the best footballing sides.
“To be joining this squad really is a dream for any footballer. I still have plenty of learning and developing to do, and I know under Pep’s management I can become a better player, which is really exciting for me,” he said.
After a rather disappointing season with Chelsea, the former Real Madrid man wants to now have some rest before linking up with his new teammates for pre-season.
“My plan now is to rest for a few weeks before coming back to Manchester to prepare for the new season. I want to help this club stay at the top and win more trophies.”
Manchester City director of football, Txiki Begiristain has said “He can play as a 6 or an 8, has plenty of experience at top level clubs and he understands the Premier League. It was a very simple decision to bring him to City because he has the tactical and technical qualities we are looking for in a midfielder.”
