Ghana Premier League Champions Medeama SC has been paired against Nigerian side Remo Stars in the CAF Champions League first preliminary round. The Ghanaians are returning to Africa for the first time in many years after winning the Ghanaian league.
Remo Stars, formed in 2010, finished as first-runner-ups to Enyimba FC in the just-ended season, thus securing their place in Africa’s top club competition.
The two teams will face off for the first leg of the doubleheader between August 18 and 20, with the second leg taking place a week later between August 25 and 27. The winner of the tie will play Horoya AC of Guinea.
Meanwhile, FA Cup champions Dreams FC have also been paired against Milo FC de Kankan of Guinea. The first leg of their tie will take place in Guinea on the same dates as the Champions League. Dreams FC will host their rivals in Ghana a week later to complete the preliminary round’s first set. The tie’s winner will face Niger’s AS Douanes or Seira Leone’s Kallon FC.
Ghanaian clubs have performed measurably in Africa recently, with Hearts of Oak and Kotoko bowing out very early last season. Medeama and Dreams FC would hope to avoid the same fate and raise Ghana’s image in their respective competitions.
