Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has approached Chelsea and Arsenal stars Callum Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah over a nationality switch. The two have represented England at various youth levels with Hudson-Odoi even playing for the Three Lions on three occasions.
However, none of them has been considered by England manager, Gareth Southgate in recent call-ups. While Eddie Nketiah has regularly played for the youth teams, Odoi has in recent times constantly turned down invitations to join the junior sides following repeated snubs by the senior team.
Prior to the world cup in Qatar, Ghanaian fans had hopes of seeing at least Hudson-Odoi featuring for the Stars but it did not happen, casting doubts over his possible switch to play for the West Africans.
Despite the long wait and uncertainties, Chris Hughton who took charge of the team earlier this year has revealed that he has contacted the duo in connection with them playing for Ghana.
Speaking to talkSports, Chris Hughton said, “The issue is, and it is understandable, particularly for someone like myself who was born here. I have an Irish mother, [and a] Ghanaian father and chose to play for Ireland at that particular time.
“These are two players that have represented England at quite a few of the underage teams. So some of it is understandable. We have been in contact with them.
“Not just in my time, I think from before as well. It is a process. But ultimately it will be about both of them making that decision that they want to play but we have had good dialogue with them.”
As the wait continues for the decision of Hudson-Odoi who is seeking to sort out his future at Chelsea and Nketiah, Ghanaian will be hoping the decision comes good. Ghana’s next match is against the Central African Republic in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. They will then play two international friendlies against the United States and Mexico in October.
