Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the member of Parliament for Effutu and Majority Leader has urged the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the four vacant seats case. The court delivered its ruling on the expedited case less than a month after its powers were invoke to intervene in the ongoing parliamentary impasse.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo led a 7-member panel to sit on the case and on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 delivered the court’s ruling.
“By court in a majority decision of five two, Lovelace Johnson JSC and Ahmadu Tanko JSC dissenting on the issue of jurisdiction, the plaintiff’s action succeeds the full reasons and orders of the court shall be filed with the registrar by close of date, tomorrow, 13th, November 2024 that is the judgment of the court,” Justice Torkornoo said.
After the ruling, Alexander Afenyo-Markin who was pleased with the decision urged the NDC and the Speaker of Parliament to comply. Having previously said he will not sit on the Minority seats for fear of spiritual implications, Afenyo-Markin was very pleased to have 5-2 victory over the Speaker.
“Democracy requires decency and that is the path that the NPP took. We expect our colleagues from the other side and the Speaker to respect the decision of the court. Ghana shines in the eyes of Africans and we must hold that dearly,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
“We should all respect the decision. All we want is peace in the country and that is what we chose and that is what we got,” he noted.
