National Honours: full list of 47 recipients

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo presented national honours to deserving Ghanaians who have served the nation world in the past especially during the country’s most troubled times. Many esteemed individuals including lawyers and chief executives were awarded as part of the event for their roles in serving the country in various capacities.

In presenting the awards, President Akufo-Addo noted that the event was a national event and had no political, religious or ethnic meaning but one for Ghana and by Ghanaians. He said the event was necessary in order to recognize the efforts of those who shouldered the country’s burden in very difficult circumstances especially during the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ghana-Cote d’Ivoire maritime dispute.

The event saw 47 seven Ghanaians received medals and sashes in three categories under the Order of the Volta. There were honours for members of Ghana’s legal team at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in the maritime boundary dispute against Cote d’Ivoire. Members of the National Covid-19 Taskforce as well as Trustees of the Covid-19 Private Sector Taskforce were also awarded.

Special awards were given to Professor Akwasi Osei, first Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority; Margaret Sarpong Darkwah, Ghana’s first female Police Commissioner; Dr Veronica Agartha Martinson, a crop scientist and Emeritus Professor Johnson Kwasi Wiredu, a celebrated philosopher.

Mrs Veronica Bekoe, the designer of the popular and life-saving Veronica Bucket which became popular during the Covid-19 pandemic was also honoured with an individual award.
