The former Member of Parliament for Old Tafo Constituency Dr Anthony Akoto Osei has died, according to a post by Parliament.
Dr Akoto Osei, a former Minister of Monitoring and Evaluation under the first Akufo-Addo administration died at the age of 69 years.
His death was reported by Parliament on Monday via a Facebook post. The post stated, “Former Old Tafo MP, Hon. Dr Anthony Akoto Osei passes away. May he rest in peace”.
A former associate professor of Economics at Howard University, Dr Anthony Akoto Osei has served in various capacities in government and private including for international bodies such as the World Bank.
He went to Parliament for the first time as an MP in 2004 when he won the Old Tafo seat as part of the 36 seats of the 39 that the New Patriotic Party won in the Ashanti Region. He retained his seat in 2008 despite the NPP losing two seats in the region to totalled 34 as President Kuffour exited office for the Atta Mills-led NDC government to take over.
As a Member of Parliament, he served on the Finance and Defense Committees in the 7th Parliament while also a member of President Akufo-Addo’s 19-member cabinet.
Previously, he worked as a Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning in 2003 before being elevated to a substantive minister when his boss Kwadwo Baah Wiredu died in office. He remained in the role until the NPP-led government exited office in 2009.
Brief
Dr Anthony Akoto Osei was born in the capital of the Bono Region, Sunyani on April 18, 1953, and had his secondary education at Achimota School and the Opoku Ware School. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Oberlin College in Ohio in the United States before later graduating from Howard University with PhD in economics.
He was a member of the management board of Merchant Bank and an associate professor of economics at Dillard University.
Mr Akoto Osei was a practising Catholic and was married with three children.
